Special Arrangements for Region XIII

 for the
Year 2000 ASME Student Design Contest
Final Posting, February 3, 2000
Note:  Submission deadline changed from original "Final" posting of January 17, 2000

Region XIII consists of all of the world except for the United States, Canada, and Mexico.  At present there is no single annual Regional Student Conference at which a design contest can be run.  Consequently, special procedures have been arranged so that members of Student Sections in Region XIII can participate in the Student Design Contest.  This document deals with the procedures for determining the student team which will represent Region XIII at the final contest at the IMECE.

The process described here has been worked out by Region XIII officers in consultation with the Student Design Contest Committee.

Procedure for Choosing the Regional Winner

For each participating Student Section a Selection Committee, consisting of the Faculty Advisor of the Student Section and two to four ASME Members chosen from industries and universities, will be appointed by the Senior Section Chair .  The Selection Committee will run a live competition for the Student Section following the "Recommended Guidelines for Conducting the Contest" to select the first, second and third place winners.

The top three winners will be required to prepare a video tape of no more than twenty minutes duration to explain clearly the principles on which their device operates and to show their device in action.  Each Selection Committee will submit the winning three video tapes to the Judging Panel appointed by the Vice President of Region XIII.  The Judging Panel will select the first, second and third place winners for the Region.  The first place winner will represent Region XIII in the finals at the IMECE as described in the General Rules.

It is the responsibility of the student team to make sure that their video is clear and understandable.  The tape should be narrated;  video recordings without sound or explanations will not be accepted for final judging at the Regional level.  A portion of this tape must be an uninterrupted recording showing the two successive runs required in the contest, made without touching or servicing the device in between.

Student teams are encouraged to include at least the following items in their video:

The Faculty Advisor of the Student Section must submit the video tapes from the top three finishers to the Judging Panel appointed by the Regional Vice President.  This may be done directly or through the "Outside N. America" office of ASME.  The videos must be accompanied by a cover letter, on institutional or ASME letterhead, signed by the Faculty Adviser attesting that all of the contest scoring and procedural rules rules were followed.
Submissions from Faculty Advisers must be postmarked by
Thursday, June 15, 2000 for inclusion in the judging for Region XIII.
